MMA Fight Shorts
Mixed Martial Arts is an intense and strenuous contact fighting sport that has grown in popularity over the last few years like few sports have ever done. Fighters wear very little in terms of equipment during competition - a mouthguard, padded cup, 10oz fingerless gloves and a pair of lightweight, flexible shorts that allow a fighter to move uninhibited.
Anyone who wants to train to be a full contact fighter for sport or to compete should invest in the best MMA equipment. Grappling shorts are specialized for the sport and there are some key features to look for when choosing the right pair for you. In general, mixed martial arts shorts are specially designed for the sport of MMA and are durable enough to withstand the constant pulling and tugging, but yet comfortable enough to wear.
One of the key considerations in selecting the right mma fight shorts is the fabric. Full contact fighting shorts are usually much lighter than beach style boardshorts typically seen on surfers - although they look similar - or shorts designed for other sports such as basketball. Most MMA equipment companies use lighter weight material because it performs better and is more comfortable and less cumbersome.
Another key consideration is whether or not your garment features the inclusion of splits in the side panels. The ideal pair of grappling shorts should have split side panels for unrestricted movement while grappling and kicking. Side panels are essential if you have large muscular thighs to allow for ease of movement and unrestricted action.
Many of the mma fight shorts feature spandex [or a similar stretch materail] flex panels in the crotch area in order to allow the shorts to move with the fighter rather rip under tension. MMA shorts with a stretch panel in the crotch are recommended and adds to the comfort and wearability.

Wear shorts that fit! MMA fighters are known for cutting weight and bulking up to make a weight class. If you plan to cut 15 pounds - you're going to need several pairs of shorts. Most shorts will come with a drawstring and or velco enclosure. Most fighter will want several pair of combat shorts anyway, but a drawstring can help adjust the shorts to fit.
MMA training shorts are available with padding to ease the amount of punishment a fighter endures during training. Shock Doctor make a model called the Power Compression Short which can be worn under your usual MMA shorts. Its up to the fighter to decide if a padded inner short gives an advantage during training or if they prefer their training to be as close to a real fight as possible.
There have been some interesting [and controversial] developments in combat shorts recently. Most notably, the advent of stretch panels in the crotch area that are designed to provide friction and help trap a fighter limb during and arm bar or leg lock variation. Many fighters would rather rely on technique than a patch of strecthy material, but any advantage is an advatage. Remember Royce Gracie's famous gui - many people couldn't understand why he was wearing something that seemed like such a disadvantage, but for Royce it provided a surface between his body and the opponent that allowed for extra movement.
Choose a lightweight - quick drying material. Look for ultralight combat shorts that wick away moisture quickly and dry fast helping to reduce the growth of bacteria, which can lead to mold and mildew and an unpleasant odor. Of course, you still have to wash your shorts after each use, unless you plan choke your opponent out with the smell of mildew... Hmmmn..
